Domestic violence is an important issue for United Methodist Women. The problem is pervasive - affecting women and families worldwide - and it is found in almost every community. Therefore our response must be a global one, which in turn gives us the opportunity to work with some extraordinary partners. One of those partners is the World YWCA, which works around the world to attack the root causes of domestic violence, along with responding to victims and survivors.
We are honored to participate in the organization’s NoXcuse for Violence Against Women campaign, which was kicked off October 13 with the beginning of the YWCA Week Without Violence, and will lead into 16 Days of Activism to Stop Gender Violence beginning November 25. The aim of the campaign is to end the practice of blaming the victim, which we so often see in domestic violence cases. United Methodist Women stands firm with our partners in proclaiming that there is no excuse that can justify violence against another human being.
While Domestic Violence Awareness campaigns are very important and bring attention to the tremendous number of persons who suffer at the hands of loved ones, as well as the impact this violence has on larger society, we urge our members to continue to raise awareness and work to address this issue locally, nationally and globally year-round.
