The World Federation of Methodist and Uniting Church Women gather this week in Houston, Texas, for its 13th world assembly.

Methodist and Uniting Women from around the world convene this week in Houston, Texas, for the 13th world assembly of the

World Federation for Methodist and Uniting Church Women a worldwide fellowship of officially recognized Methodist, United and Uniting Church women with more than 3 million members. The assembly takes place Aug. 29 to Sept. 4. As members of the federation, United Methodist Women will be there.

Called to Proclaim
The theme for the 2016 assembly is "Chosen People: Called to Proclaim," with the scriptural focus of 1 Peter 2:9-10. This theme for the next five years offers opportunity to bring in a balance of Wesleyan holiness and social concern,

More than 800 have registered to attend, and others will visit during the day. In addition to voting on world officers and budget, participants will experience worship, workshops, Bible study, a world fair-trade market, a cultural day and a Texas barbecue. Three days of workshops will be offered on the topics of worship, social action and relationships. Children's ministry, music, environmental justice, trafficking, mentoring and holy humor are some examples of workshops to choose from.

World Federation voting delegates representing United Methodist Women are assistant general secretaries Andris Salter and Sally Vonner along with board members Clara Ester, Taylorie Bailey, Elizabeth Leyva, Diane Braun and Magdala Edmond.

"I'm looking forward to meeting women from all different cultures and enjoying being in their presence," said Leyva, a director from the Rio Texas Conference. "I can't wait to feel God's spirit—I already feel it. It's an honor to be among women with different experiences and gifts."

The world assembly is a unique opportunity to be in one place at one time with women of Wesleyan traditions from all over the world.

"Women will come together to reach out to the world and care for God's creation," said Director Taylorie Bailey from the Detroit Conference. "I'm excited to come together and work together for the common cause of making a difference in the world for God's people.

All eight of United Methodist Women's regional missionaries will be in attendance as well. United Methodist Women is also sponsoring the attendance of Julienne Ngo Um, president of United Methodist Women in Cameroon and one of the women who received a seminary scholarship given by United Methodist Women at General Conference 2012, and Elena Melnikova, the women's desk coordinator for the Eurasia Area Conference of The United Methodist Church. Regional Missionary Catherine Akale and member and Be Just. Be Green guide for climate justice Ellen Lipsey will lead workshops at the event.

In addition to an offering to the federation, a special offering for Link opens in a new window. Justice for Our Neighbors, a United Methodist Women partner, will be taken.
