General Conference Day 4—Climate and committees

General Conference Day 4: Climate justice, continued committee meetings.

On Thursday evening, United Methodist Women joined the General Conference Climate Vigil hosted by the Pacific Northwest Conference. Executive for environmental and economic justice Kathleen Stone spoke for United Methodist Women's work on its environmental justice priority, highlighting our mission study Climate Justice: A Call to Hope and Action and encouraging those at the vigil to attend a Mission u this summer to learn more and find partners in the work.

Committees continued to meet, debate, amend legislation. Subcommittees make decisions on which legislation will come to full committee for vote. Full committees vote on which legislation will make it to the plenary floor. (This is putting it simply. Check out links below to learn more.) Monday begins "calendar items," meaning the petitions to be voted on by the body of General Conference.

All committee meetings are open to observers, and our friends at the General Commission on Religion and Race and General Commission on the Status and Role of Women serve as monitors to keep track of who speaks in meetings. United Methodist Women staff, board members and friends are here to observe the goings-on and make sure women, children and youth are not overlooked in decision making. United Methodist Women members and friends are also serving the the very important role of delegate and get to speak for or against and vote on all legislation.
