From May 10-20, 2016, the General Conference of The United Methodist Church will meet in Portland, Oregon. United Methodist Women will be there to ensure women, children and youth are a priority for the denomination and are not overlooked in any legislative, budget or theological decisions. General Conference Day 5—Laity and legislation

General Conference Day 5: Laity love and, you guessed it, more committee meetings (but this was the last day).

Tonya Murphy, Ariel Murphy and Stacie Hawkins cheer for United Methodist Women at the celebration of laity dinner at General Conference.

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
—Matthew 28:18-20

On the first Friday evening of General Conference, the United Methodist Women Office of Deaconess and Home Missioner co-hosted a celebration of laity dinner with United Methodist Men and Discipleship Ministries. The Book of Discipline of The United Methodist Church (¶127) states, "Every layperson is called to carry out the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20)." This same Bible verse cited for laity ministry is also the Bible verse for the 2016 General Conference. Therefore go. Make disciples. As a proud laywomen's organization, we know the power of laity.

Saturday was the final day for all of the committees to pass legislation to beor not to bevoted on the plenary floor. Via the legislation tracking link below you can check status of our petitions. If you choose the "final action" tab, it will list for you what the plenary decided on the legislation that did make the floor.

I'll post a breakdown of our legislation soon. Stay tuned!
