A Child of God

Galatians 4:7

And because you are children, God has sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts crying, “Abba!” Father!” So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir through God. Galatians 4:7 (NRSV)

While on a mission trip in 2012, I had the privilege to teach the song “Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart” to children at Ecole La Providence in Petion-ville, Haiti. One morning, I awoke to the familiar early morning sounds of birds chirping, roosters crowing, cars doors closing, but there was one distinct sound that though familiar was unfamiliar at 6 a.m. It was the sweet sound of a child singing “Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart, Give thanks to the Holy One because He’s given Jesus Christ his Son.” Though the child spoke very little English, she understood the salvation story—that Jesus was born, lived a sinless life, died on the cross and rose again for all of our sins. Just knowing that as a child of God I am forgiven the moment I say “Yes” to His will and His way and at that moment the spirit of the living God dwells within me as an adopted member of Abba’s royal family.

Once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior we are transformed into a new creation. We become Christ-like. Our hearts are transformed. The Holy Spirit’s DNA dwells within us and with a transformed heart we are able to commit to the Great Commission, bringing others to know that the gift of Jesus Christ was given to us for eternal life. During this Advent season may you share and celebrate all that the Lord has done for you as your faithful, loving Father.

Reflection: How does knowing God as your Father impact the way you view your relationship with Him?

Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, May the gift you have given us be the light that we use to spark the life of the Christ that is a present in each of us when we accept you as our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Testimony for Dec. 11-17:

Each teen residing in the Near Northside neighborhood need to hear words of hope, love, and affirmation; mentors remind these youth who are often considered “the least of us” that they are, indeed, precious in God’s sight and created in Christ’s image. -Wesley Community Center, Houston, Texas.
