Election 2020: Voting Our Values

On November 3, 2020, we will be electing our president, Congressional representatives and senators, along with many state and local officials. During this year in which we celebrated 100 years of hard-won women’s suffrage and 55 years since the Voting Rights Act of 1965 which extended that right to all women, we need to exercise our right to vote and help others to vote and have their vote counted!

We face national elections during both the COVID-19 pandemic and an economic crisis. Many fear to vote at the polls due to the pandemic, yet some states are restricting the use of absentee ballots. There are concerns about the capacity of a de-funded United States Postal Service to deliver ballots in time. There are fewer poll watchers and may be fewer voting sites and longer lines. After the demise of key elements of the Voting Rights Act, state efforts at voter suppression have proliferated. By voting, United Methodist Women can take action personally and collectively to support our democracy at this critical time.
