John 11:1-45

“But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.” —John 11:22

The story of the death of Lazarus is a typical example of what Jesus can do when we put our hope and faith in him.

Lazarus, a friend of Jesus, was sick. His sisters, Mary and Martha, sent word to Jesus about the situation, which was hopeless. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had been dead for four days.

Despite this, Martha still had hope and faith in their friend. She said to Jesus, “But even now I know God will give you whatever you ask of him.” (John 11:22) It was as if Martha was saying, “I have hope that you can do something.” She trusted that Jesus could do something. Indeed, Jesus did something miraculous. He raised Lazarus from the dead!

For My Family

Jesus also did it for my family. During the rebel interregnum in Sierra Leone, my family and I went into hiding. Unfortunately for us, one of the rebels located where we were. He sent word to ask my husband, Abraham, who was then the principal of one of the premier schools in Freetown, why schools remained closed. Life was at a standstill in the country then. Those were the days when the rebels were killing people indiscriminately.
He asked Abraham to come out of the house, or otherwise the entire family would face death. We started praying fervently, calling upon the name of Jesus. Finally, my husband decided to go outside and face the rebel. He prayed before he left, “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for my Lord is with me.”

Upon seeing Abraham, the rebel was speechless and confused. Abraham was his former principal! The rebel put down his gun and said, “I am sorry.” He slowly walked away. Jesus our friend interceded on our behalf!

As you go through this Lenten season, let the words of Martha ring in your ears: “But even now I know God will give you whatever you ask of him.” Have faith and believe that Jesus can work wonders for you. Be a Martha and cast your burdens unto Jesus.
