Just Energy Strategy Session: Biomass and the Threat It Poses to Climate Justice and Racial Justice
Wood pellets that can be used as fuel in bioenergy facilities.

Please join us for this month’s Just Energy for All Strategy and Capacity Building Session on Wednesday, April 21, 3 p.m. ET.

As we celebrate Earth Day, join us to examine the concerns of biomass around a just energy for all future. Biomass has been touted by some as a renewable energy source and a climate solution. But biomass-burning power plants emit 150 percent of the carbon dioxide of coal.

The production of wood pellets that are used for fuel is increasing rapidly in the southeastern United States and disproportionately impacts the health and well-being of Black communities. It is a major source of air pollution, emitting harmful particulate matter, airborne pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. It degrades local water quality.

Please join us today to learn about the direct impact biomass facilities are having on Black communities, the specifics of biomass, existing policies and opportunities to stop biomass and advance a just energy future.

Our speakers for this month’s session include:

  • Katherine Egland, Co-Founder of Education, Economics, Environmental, Climate and Health Organization (EEECHO) and Chair of the Environmental and Climate Justice Committee for the National Board of Directors of the NAACP
  • Laura Haight, U.S. Policy Director for the Partnership for Policy Integrity (PFPI)

This session is organized by United Methodist Women and part of United Methodist Women’s Just Energy for All monthly strategy and capacity building sessions that take place on the third Wednesday of every month at 3 pm ET. All are welcome to join.
