Merry Mission in Ohio

Merry Mission in Ohio

For the past 24 years, the Putnam County District Library in Ottawa, Ohio, has sponsored a Christmas Tree Festival in which local organizations and families can decorate and display a tree in a theme of their choosing. The trees are on display to the public during the month of December. United Methodist Women at Ottawa Trinity United Methodist Church has used this opportunity to share with the community our mission outreach to the local organization community.

Trinity's most recent Christmas tree, designed by local United Methodist Women member Jo Deskins, was titled "Merry Mission." The tree shared the joy in which giving to mission provides. Red bulbs were used to highlight the names of the national mission institutions that Trinity United Methodist Women supports. Other ornaments included representations of simple objects that are given to mission by the unit.

On each of these ornaments we included a Scripture passage. Some examples are “Go and enjoy choice foods and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared” (Nehemiah 8:10) on packages of Kool-Aid, “Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house” (Matthew 5:15) on a candlestick, “And I also have given you cleanness of teeth” (Amos 4:6) on toothpaste, “Yea, they shall all cover their lips (Micah 3:7) on lip balm, “By their fruits, ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:16) on fruit snacks and “They have ears, but they do not hear; noses they have, but they do not smell (Psalm 115:6) on tissues.

This has been a great way to share with the community how Ottawa Trinity United Methodist Women puts their faith hope and love in action.
