United Methodist Women Supports Church Statement on #MeToo and #ChurchToo Movements

United Methodist Women welcomes the press release from the Council of Bishops and the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women addressing the #MeToo and #ChurchToo movements.  With them, we have seen the waves of women telling their stories of sexual harassment and abuse. We honor those who have spoken up and those for whom it is too painful or risky to speak. The voices of these women matter as do the court decisions, actions by employers and resignations that have been part of the result.

With the Council and the Commission and all who have spoken up and all who have followed through on reports of abuse and harassment, we look forward to the continuing work of instituting new workplace norms (not just rules, but norms of behavior) that make churches, workplaces and volunteer sites places in which all of us, women and men, are treated as being fully human and deserving of respect and dignity.
