Training begins this February

Take Part in the Global Media Monitoring Project 2020

United Methodist Women, you are invited to take part in monitoring the image and representation of women in the news media on a specific day in spring of 2020. United Methodist Women has been taking an active part in this Global Media Monitoring Project (GMMP) since 1995.

—In 2015 monitoring, for every four people interviewed, seen, or cited in news worldwide, only one is a woman.

—Only 26 percent of subjects and sources of mainstream Internet news stories and news media tweets are women.

— overall presence of women in print, television, and radio in the US is 38 percent.

—Gender equity is still a goal to strive and advocate for.

United Methodist Women will participate in the Global Media Monitoring Project 2020, a twice a decade effort undertaken every five years by the World Association for Christian Communication, designed to document and change the portrayal of women in the media.

Worldwide, 126 countries have signed up so far to monitor gender representation in news media. Everyone who monitors is a volunteer!

The Global Media Monitoring Project is the longest longitudinal study on gender in the world’s media. It is also the largest advocacy initiative for gender equity in media.

Come and be part of this unique effort! To participate in the U.S., e-mail Yvette Moore, Director of Public Relations and Marketing for United Methodist Women, at: YMoore@unitedmethodistwomen.org.
